~ Juwan Acevedo, Class of 2024
As I woke up, thoughts of the trip filled me with excitement, propelling me out of bed. Stepping outside, a chilly breeze greeted my face. Within 30 minutes, I arrived at school, ready for the adventure ahead. Boarding the bus just like the kids in the magic school bus, I settled into the comfy leather seats, packed with curiosity and predictions. A tornado of emotions and thoughts flooded my mind as we started the journey to Windsor Mountain.
Gazing out the window, I become amazed by all the lush greenery, breathing in the fresh natural scent of the surroundings. Walking along the dirt and rock trail, the gentle sound of water droplets and the rustle of leaves accompanied me, creating a calm nerve chilling setting.
Upon reaching the cabin, I grasped my bags tightly, feeling the texture of the wooden door and the chill of the metal handle as I entered. Alongside my classmates, we made our way to the meeting hall, where Marigold the goat and Shaggy the pony greeted us. Engaging in games, I felt a weird mix of nervousness and excitement, especially when interacting with unfamiliar people.
Following the games, predictions grew from the mouths of others for the upcoming activities, and I knew these activities would challenge me to step out of my comfort zone. In the cafeteria between the chatter of fellow students, I grabbed my meal and came up with where to sit. I found this table with familiar faces like Remy and Luke. Despite my nerves, I started a conversation with them.
As we transitioned to the first activity, the low ropes course, I encountered Emily, the staff member. Her calm personality and infectious laughter eased my negative thoughts. Before driving head first into the challenge, she encouraged us to share one thing we’d bring to a deserted island, making a friendship around us.
Throughout the course, problem solving, communication and teamwork were critical. Despite many failures, we always laughed along the way. As rain purged down and winds intensified the area around us the challenge became more difficult. With cooperation and trust, we navigated the slippery obstacles, forging bonds and friendships during the process. With more confidence, we tackled the second activity with ease, our experience made our teamwork and determination stronger.
Reflecting on the trip, I learned valuable lessons that extended beyond the mountains and clouds. It taught me the importance of teamwork in overcoming obstacles and struggles, the value of embracing new experiences, and the courage to step out of my comfort zone, even in the face of a 50/50.
