A Myth

~Donald Wallace, Class of 2027

In the beginning of time, there were the three great opposites, the yin and the yang, the capitalists and the socialists, and the dogs and the squirrels. The dogs used to love to eat nuts. Then the squirrels asked the dogs to a great meeting about the distribution of nuts. The squirrels aspired to learn why the dogs were so interested in nuts.

A squirrel asked, “why do you like nuts so much? You have all this meat like rabbits and raccoons, but all you want are the nuts”.

“We love the nuts, because of their great crunchy taste,” replied a dog.

After the meeting had ended, all the dogs returned to their homes. When they opened their pantries, they were empty. All the nuts were gone. The dogs had only one explanation, the squirrels stole the nuts.

The dogs were furious. They waged war on the squirrels for millenia. Master squirrel hunting dogs developed techniques on how to climb and jump across trees. Finally, a dog had caught a squirrel. The squirrel gave the nuts it had to the dog and it was let free. When the dog ate the nut though, it was bitter. It was bitter from the hate of war, the wrath of the dogs when they sighted a squirrel.

The dogs realized the nuts would never taste good again. The techniques of climbing were not passed down from generation to generation and were lost forever. Today, dogs do not eat nuts, but they chase squirrels, as that is their natural instinct passed down by their ancestors.
