Creating joy for our community

It was early in the school year and the beginning of October. I was doing knee hockey as a flex block. While we were in study hall Rex and Jimmy asked Mr. Burgess for permission to work in the conference room for a presentation that they were planning on doing. I went outside to talk to them about it. It was a presentation for Breast Cancer.

I was so excited to ask to be a part of it. But they said no. So I built up the courage to tell them about my mom. My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in early March and underwent a huge surgery to get completely rid of it. I finally built up the courage to ask them and I did. They loved the idea of me joining and totally brought me in to help. At that moment I knew I was leaving knee hockey to join the eighth grade service learning advisory board or also known as SLAB. Every Thursday I got work done with my friends.

The donations from the fundraiser would be heading to Runway For Recovery. Runway For Recovery is a non-profit organization. It is built to help people who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer, They celebrate people who are survivors, honor legacies and fund families. They help afford the cost of treatment(chemotherapy and radiation) or to help other with their everyday lives like paying for food, helping support child care, housing, and transportation. Runway For Recovery hosts events and services that help inspire. The foundation was made 16 years ago by a family member of a past Fenn alumni. Every year they come to Fenn to present about how Breast Cancer affects people.

Our fundraiser was a pie in the face fundraiser for students to pie teachers in the face. During our presentation we talked about the effects of Breast Cancer, how Breast Cancer has affected us and  how people can help. During the service learning advisory board meetings on Thursdays we worked on how much our goal would end up being, our  posters so help make sure people donate and actually how to set up the donation. We finally came to an agreement that our goal would end up being one thousand dollars. I was only able to sell raffle tickets the first day and we ended up getting six hundred and eighty five dollars.

For Friday and Monday I was in South Dakota so I wasn’t able to sell tickets but when I got back on Tuesday morning which was the day of the raffle we made  one thousand one hundred dollars! I felt so accomplished but the job wasn’t finished. We had to actually execute the pie in the face. We weren’t  expecting  over one hundred and fifty students to come out and see who won.

When we were listing off the people who won it felt so amazing, everyone was in a circle so excited to watch. At the end it. It Makes me feel so good putting in all of the extra work to help support a foundation that was really close to home and it also made me, Rex, Jimmy feel like our job was finished. We successfully donated one thousand one hundred dollars while we still were able to make the students happy and make a core memory that we will remember forever and hope other people remember for a long time too. We hope it

goes down as one of the best fundraisers is Fenn history

People who didn’t get as much credit as they deserve was Mr. Chef Ayotte, Mrs. Flanagan and Mrs. Fay. Thank you so much to the Fenn community for blessing Jimmy and Rex, I, with the opportunity to have a blast while donating the money that Runway For Recovery deserved.
